- 1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
- 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 2 tablespoons baking soda
- Coarse salt, for topping
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Stir in salt and flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a rope about 20 inches long.
- Twist each rope into a pretzel shape.
- In a shallow dish, dissolve baking soda in 4 cups of hot water.
- Dip each pretzel in the baking soda solution for 30 seconds.
- Place pretzels on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle generously with coarse salt.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Notes
- For a chewier pretzel, you can let the dough rise for a second time in the refrigerator overnight.
- Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.
